Beneath the Bleeding by Val McDermid

This latest offering from Val McDermid is, I think, one of her best. Once again featuring DCI Carol Jordan and Dr Tony Hill it is a great police procedural. There is plenty of crime including poisonings and bombings. The interaction between the ‘normal’ police force and those who fight terrorism is interesting, albeit a bit alarming, with the former referring to the latter as Imperial Storm Troopers. We are given some insight into Tony Hill’s earlier life and the relationship between Carol and Tony remains as enigmatic as ever.

Glass

The new Canberra Glassworks is opening in a matter of days. Glass can be decorative and/or useful and the library has a diverse range of books on the subject, covering topics such as glass techniques, glass painting, stained glass, glass beads, glass paperweights and even bottle collecting.

These items can be found at the Dewey number 748 at your local library (don't forget that items can be easily transferred from one branch to another).

Blaze of GloryMichael Pryor (Fantasy)

17 year old Aubrey is a bright, impatient and charismatic school boy who has grown up in his father’s shadow. Fortunately for Aubrey he’s able to work in an area his father has no talent with – magic. This stands him in good stead when he and his best friend George decide to investigate the attempted assassination of Prince Albert and find themselves mixed up international politics. Of course Aubrey has other thing to worry about, but I’ll let you find those out on your own. Despite the fact Aubrey was irritating at times, I’m waiting with baited breath for the sequel. A thoroughly enjoyable experience from one of the authors of the Quentaris series.

Recommended - Freakonomics

Freakonomics: A rogue economist explores the hidden side of everything by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner

This is an enjoyable book, though describing it is actually bit difficult. It's a kind of "six degrees of separation" that poses questions in order to highlight similarities between seemingly unconnected topics or situations. It shows how society can be, and is, driven (or manipulated) by "incentives".

This is not just a book for economists or mathematicians; it will intrigue many people to discover what sumo wrestlers might have in common with teachers, or how the structure of a drug-dealing street gang replicates that of many legitimate businesses.

Borrow the book from the library, or visit the official web site for more information from the world of Freakonomics.

Bruno's life changes the day his family moves to "Out-With". There he meets a boy who lives on the other side of a wire fence. Their friendship leads to a new understanding for Bruno, and a gripping climax to the story.

Described by some people as a fable, this award-winning book of the Holocaust as seen through the eyes of an innocent boy, is compelling reading for all ages.

The fight for English: How language pundits ate, shot, and left by David Crystal

This book by David Crystal is a fascinating and very readable overview of the development of the English language. It looks at the various groups that over the centuries have wanted their particular way of spelling, punctuation, grammar etc to be regarded as the ‘right’ way of doing things and why these changes didn’t succeed. Crystal says that the language is constantly changing and he wonders why the fight to establish prescriptive rules has become such a ‘Big Issue’ to some people.
